    The purpose of an oil filter is strain any foreign contamination out of the oil before it is fed into the oil galleries of the engine. This prevents blockages and engine wear to internal engine components.
     
    An oil filter should be changed every time an oil service is done on your car. Ideally every 5,000 to 10,000kms depending on your vehicle.
     
    It is always a good idea to have a spare oil filter, making that next oil change much more convenient.
